The foundations of the İzmir Free Zone were laid in 1984 with the İzmir Leather Industrialists Construction Cooperative. While the zone received the status of İzmir Organized Leather Industry Zone in 1988, İzmir Menemen Leather Free Zone-İDESBAŞ was established in 1997. In 2011, with the increasing potential of the Zone, a step was taken to expand into different sectors besides leather and the zone was named İzmir Free Zone-İZBAŞ.
İzmir Free Zone is established on 1,620,000 m² where 1,100,00 m² of the total area is the net area that can be allocated for investment. Currently, 960,000 m² of the total area has been allocated. The investment allocation rate is 88%. As of September 2021 in İzmir Free Zone; 181 companies, consisting of 156 domestic, 14 foreign, 11 local and foreign partnerships, operate and a total of 4,813 people are employed.
Although leather manufacturing and trading are at the top of the sectoral distribution with the advantage of being a Leather Specialized Customs; Chemical Production and Trade, Food, Electric-Electronics, Automotive, Plastic Pipe Profile and Plastic Products, Marble and Natural Stone, Elevator Lifting and Carrying Equipment, Composite Wnd Turbine Blade, Medical Materials are other sectors that have invested in the İzmir Free Zone.
